Customs clearance of parcels and the handling fee

All purchases from outside the EU must be cleared. Gifts, publications and documents must also be cleared, regardless of their value.

Clearance means that you inform Customs of the contents of the shipment and, if necessary, pay the VAT and customs duties.

Clear the item easily through Postache

Why do I need to pay a handling fee in addition to the customs clearance?

Postache's handling fee of EUR 3.10 covers the costs incurred by Postache

  • the manual handling of the item to be cleared
  • warehousing for the item
  • notifications sent to the customer

The handling fee must be paid within 20 days of the arrival of the item in the country. If the handling fee is not paid and the item is not cleared in time, the item must be returned to the sender.

You can also pay the handling fee at Postache’s outlet when picking up the item. In this case, the handling fee is EUR 3.30.

Do I always need to pay the handling fee?

If you receive a notification from Finnish Customs that you don’t have to pay tax for your item, you don’t have to pay Postache’s handling fee for it either. Postache receives this information automatically from Finnish Customs, so you don’t need to inform Postache about it separately. Your item is released for delivery within 24 hours of customs clearance.

You don’t need to pay Postache’s handling fee for IOSS items or items whose value is less than EUR 45, such as small gifts.

You also don’t need to pay a handling fee if you make the customs clearance through OmaPostache. In this case, in addition to VAT, you also pay the service fee of EUR 1.00 through the OmaPostache service.

Did you pay the handling fee when you didn’t need to?

If you already paid Postache’s handling fee for an item you that doesn’t require the payment of the VAT to Finnish Customs, use the form to apply for a refund of the handling fee. Please also attach the customs clearance decision you got from Finnish Customs.

The VAT has already been paid for the IOSS item

IOSS purchase refers to an online purchase for which you’ve already paid the VAT at the time of purchase. If the online store provides us with the necessary customs clearance information electronically, you won’t need to clear the item as we’ll do it for you.

If the sending online store doesn’t provide us with the necessary information, we won’t be able to clear the item. In this case, you must inform Finnish Customs of the content of the item once the item has arrived in the country. Postache will send you a notification once you can do this.

If you pay the VAT to the online store already at the time of purchase and the online store notifies Postache about it, we’ll clear the goods for you. In this case, you don’t need to clear the item or pay Postache's handling fee.

We take care of customs clearance for IOSS items for you

IOSS purchase refers to an online purchase for which you’ve already paid the VAT at the time of purchase. If the sending online store provides us with the necessary information electronically, you won’t need to take any action when the item arrives in the country. We’ll take care of the customs clearance for you. You’ll receive a notification once the item is available for pickup.

What if Postache can't clear the shipment?

If the sending online store doesn’t provide us with the information necessary for customs clearance, we won’t be able to perform the import clearance on your behalf, even if the VAT were already paid. You must inform Finnish Customs of the content of the item once the item has arrived in the country. Postache will send you a notification once you can do this. Postache will clear your item through customs for free. Your item will be directed to transport faster, as it will not need to be moved to a warehouse to wait for the customs clearance decision.

What if I want to clear the item through customs myself?

If you wish, you can clear the item yourself. Search for the item using the item ID and decline Postache’s authorization to clear the item.

When the item arrives in Finland, you will get a customs clearance notification in the post. The item will be moved to a warehouse to wait until you clear the item in tulli.fi and you get the customs clearance decision. After this the item will be directed to transport.

Customs clearance is required for all items sent from outside the EU for which a value has been marked. This also applies to publications, publication subscriptions and all documents for which a value has been provided at the time of sending the item.
